There were at least two early colonial Drury groups that immigrated in the 1600's, the New England Drurys, which were Protestant, and the Maryland Drurys, which were Catholic. The first colonial Drury line descended from Hugh Drury (c.1616 - 1689) who came to Massachussetts around 1635 and received land in 1640. Hugh Drury is believed to be the ancestor of most of the Protestant Drury lines in America. He married Lydia Rice, daughter of Deacon Edmund Rice around 1645. Edmund Rice, baptized c.1596 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England, married Thomasine Frost at St. Mary's Church, Bury St. Edmunds, in 1618. He died May 3, 1663, in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

A descendant chart of over 3,500 Drurys from this line has been compiled by researcher Michael Drury and can be reached by clicking here. These names are not yet all in the online Gedcom file, so if you are searching for a DRURY name and don't find it in the Gedcom, please click on this Genealogy Report. Then go to "Edit" at the top of your browser, and click "Find in page" to do a search by name.

The couple migrated from Hardin County, Kentucky to Macoupin County, Illinois near the town of Girard, where they are buried in the Union Chapel Methodist Cemetery. They are descendants of Samuel and Hannah Drury (Photo Courtesy of Linda Lightholder Kmiecik)

A second New England line is believed to descend from Hugh Drury but has not been proven. This line begins with Samuel Drury, Sr. He was born C. 1768 in Albany, NY and died in 1824/25 in Hardin Co., Kentucky, and married c. 1791 Hannah Brownson. He believed to be the son of Nicholas and Catherine (Schmidt) Drury.

Two excellent reference books were written by Linda Lightholder Kmiecik on these two New England Drury lines, "The Early Drury Line of New England", 1990 and "Descendants of Samuel and Hannah Drury", 1991. You can order them from the author at Mrs. Linda L. Kmiecik, 30340 West Lake Drive, Girard, IL 62640-7063. The Early Drury Line book, published 1990, is for sale at $30.00 and the Descendants of Samuel and Hannah Drury book, published 1991, is for sale at $40.00, both including P&H. These are considered the definitive reference books on the New England branches of the Drury family.
