~Campling's Drury History~

The definitive source for Drury history has long been the 1937 book by Arthur Campling, F.S.A., "The History of the Family of Drury in the Counties of Suffolk and Norfolk From the Conquest". Campling, president of the British Society of Genealogists, was commisioned by Francis Saxham Elwes Drury to write the book, based on the assembled genealogical records of the Drurys.

F.S.E. Drury was the son of the Rev. henry Drury, Archdeacon of Wilts, and the great-grandson of the Rev. Joseph Drury, D.D. (1750-1834), headmaster of Harrow School and teacher of Lord Byron, who wrote of him later. His grandfather, Henry Thomas Joseph Drury (1778-1841) was assistant headmaster at the school for 41 years.

The Harrow School is said to have compiled an extensive Drury Pedigree during their presence at the school; presumably this information was part of teh research that made up Campling's work.

Follwing are a few of Campling's notes with illustrations for the book and correspondence with F.S.E. Drury.

Below: The work is completed by June 23, 1937. F.S.E. Drury was particular as to the color of the book; included in his files are swatches, and a note to the publisher that their selection was not "green" enough. The "little gummed slip" was indeed inserted into page vii of the finished copy, listing the four Drurys who were knighted together before the coronation of King James I (Sir Robert Drury of Rougham, Sir Henry Drury of Hedgerley, Sir Anthony Drury of Besthorpe, and Sir Dru Drury of Rollesby, "a unique event").

Right: Apparently only 50 copies of the book were printed.
