The Rev. George Henry Gideon

George Henry Gideon (1849-1911) was the son of William Gideon and Lucinda Matthews. He was born in Pope Co, AR and m. Joanna Ashmore in 1868. He began preaching soon after marriage was an early day Circuit Riding Minister. He was a true Methodist and organized the first methodist Church in Pike Co, AR in 1889. He died and is buried at Desoto, MO.

Life was hard on their Arkansas farm, and after three years of preaching on the circuit, his wife asked him to stop, but he told her the Lord had called him and he must go on. She decided then to go with him. His son, henry Err Gideon, recalled that at one time he would ride three days' journey on horseback from Desoto to Richwoods and Grubville. One time a freezing rain came down on him all the way and froze his clothes, and his son had to help him off his horse.

His brother, Rev. Thomas Jefferson Gideon (1851-1937) was also a preacher, at Hartville, MO.
