~ James Jackson Gideon ~
(1846 - 1921)
It has been said
that no man was better known and better liked in the
Ozark region than Judge James J. Gideon. Born on the soil
and reared among the descendants of the pioneers, he is
one of those self-made sons of Missouri, who while he has
distinguished himself as a lawyer and jurist, has a far
greater claim to the respect of the people in his sturdy
integrity of character, and his life-long course as a
friend of justice. He springs from a sterling
Irish-Scotch ancestry of Colonial-American stock.
At the age of 16,
he ran away from school to join the Union Army. He
enlisted 20 Jun 1863 at Springfield. in Battalion
"A", 1st Ark. Light Artillery. Then he
reenlisted in Co "H", 16th U.S. Cav. He was in
the Battle at Bonneville against Price near Jefferson
City; Battle of the Big Blue, where Marmaduke was
captured at Newtonia; and other skirmishes. He was
promoted to Corp. before he was 19 years old. He was
discharged in July 1865. Later he was elected Capt. of Co
"E" 19th Rgt. of Mo. Militia.
