~ The British Gidleys ~ The Gidley name, in its English form, is believed to originate from the village of Gidleigh in Devon, England. There has been a church on this site since the early 11th century and the remains of Gidley Castle are still there. In the church and on tombstones are three spellings of the name-- Gidleigh, Gidly, and Gidley. The name of the village is probably from "Gydda's Leigh" that is, clearing in the forest - Gydda being the mother of King Harold. (Thanks to Robert Gidley and David Grierson for background history.) The history of the Gidleys and Gidley castle can be found in a beautiful book entitled, "GIDLEIGH - A Dartmoor Village Past and Present" by Tony Grumley-Grennan and Michael Hardy. It can be ordered by sending a bankers draft for £20 + P&P [$43 including P&P] payable to Glebe Publishing to: Glebe Publishing, attn. Tony Grumley-Grennan, Gidleigh Castle, Gidleigh, Devon TQ13 8HT. The proceeds go towards the maintenance of the village hall. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ The German Gidleys ~ The webmaster's earliest known "Gidley" ancestors were German, another source of the Gidley name. The German spelling of the name was Güethle, Güthle or Gütle and would have been pronounced something like "geetlee" with a hard "G". Charles Gerard Gidley/Guethle(1828 -1892) was from Baden, Germany and moved to the area of Zell, Missouri when his father emigrated. His father was Heinrich Güthle who was born in Ebersweier, Baden, Germany in 1793, married Barbara Huber, and died in Zell, MO in 1874. Heinrich was the son of Valerian Güthle (b. 1744 in Ebersweier, Baden)and Gertrud Heitz; and the grandson of Franz Joseph Güthle and Maria Magdalena Armbruster. (Thanks to John W. Krussel) Charles Gerard Gidley/Guethle came to Missouri and married Thecla Bechtold at Zell, MO in 1857. Their children were:
After his first wife died in 1869, Charles Gerard Gidley married Rebecca Steimle at French Village, MO. Children:
