The ruins of the gatehouse. In 1888, the gatehouse still held an elegant manor that had been "modernized" and was being lived in (bottom photo, c. 1888). The left tower eventually collapsed, tearing away much of the structure.

In 1888, "The old gateway (above), of imposing structure, flanked by two lofty octagon towers, and situated about fifty yards in advance of the tower and bridge, has been converted into a spacious farm-house, and kept in perfect repair. It is now the property of John Thomas Mott, Esq., and is called Baconsthorpe Hall." From Connecticut Line of the Hayden Family.
