St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church and Cemetery, St. Inigoes, MD

The first Mass was said in St. Mary's in 1635, at the site of the present Leonard Calvert Monument. In 1638, St. Ignatius Church was built at St. Mary's City. St. Inigoes manor was granted to Jesuit missionaries in 1636. The concept of "Freedom of Religion" did not last long in St. Mary's. In 1704, Fathers Brooke and Hunter were arrested for saying Mass in St. Mary's, and the Catholic Chapel in St. Mary's was confiscated by Governor Seymour. The residence and mission were transfered to St. Inigoes in 1705. A second church was built in the chapel field in St. Mary's city in 1745. The cornerstone of this present church was laid in St. Inigoes on July 13, 1785. If you visit, be sure to pick up the key from the Naval Base guard post next door so you can tour the inside of this beautiful and historic church.
