Rio Nicholas Memorial Scholarship
Fredericksburg Highschool, Fredericksburg, TX
Dear FHS Senior,

Rio Nicholas endeared himself to everyone he met with his enthusiasm, good cheer, helpfulness, his love of a good prank, and his ever present smile. He was also and Eagle Scout, a very good athlete, a musician, and an Air Force ROTC cadet ready and willing to serve his country (hopefully as a fighter pilot). Rio set high goals, and he worked with dogged determination to achieve those goals; however, he was not always this focused and disciplined. He had an epiphany midway through high school when he realized that to go to the school of his choice, get a scholarship, and achieve his goal of flying F-18 fighter jets, he was going to have to apply himself much more than he had and work much harder than he had in the past. He re-examined his priorities, set his goals, and went to work gaining acceptance to C.S.M., one of the top engineering schools in the country, and winning one of the only 27 Air Force ROTC scholarships awarded in the state of texas.
In four short months Rio had established himself at Colorado School of Mines as an outstanding student, athlete, fraternity brother, and ROTC cadet. He was well on his way to achieving his goals. When he passed away suddenly at the age of 19, he was recognized as a highly respected and much loved presence on campus amongst his peers, his professors, his fellow cadets, and all who came in contact with him.. Rio was a true and loyal friend, a wonderful son, and a true inspiration to those who knew him. He encouraged others to believe in themselves, to never give up, and to do the right thing even if it meant going against the crowd. Rio also loved to have fun, and he learned to budget his time so that he would be able to get his work done and have plenty of time to socialize and party with his friends. He was a truly balanced man!
It is a terrible, terrible thing to lose a loved one. It is unspeakably terrible to lose someone so young and full of life. We hope that this sholarship will in some small way help young people to realize their dreams and to achieve their goals. We hope that you can use Rio's life and deeds as an inspiration and/or call to action to fight hard and never give up. If you learn something from Rio's life and the money from this scholarship helps you to be able to attend the college of your choice, then Rio will not have died in vain.

Sincerely,

The Nicholas Family
