Jean
Baptiste Vallé House
Jean
Baptiste Vallé (Sep. 25, 1760 - Aug. 3, 1849)
was the son of Francois Vallé I, the original
commandant of Ste. Genevieve. A socially historic
home, it was the center of local politics when
Jean Baptiste took over as commandant after his
brother, Francois II. He married Marie 'Jeanne'
Barbeau (1760 - 1842), the daughter of Jean
Barbeau who constructed Fort de Chartres. The
house was built in 1794, and Jean Baptiste lived
there until his death. Lafayette stayed in this
house when he visited Ste. Genevieve after the
Louisiana Purchase. It is now a private
residence, beautifully restored.
